I am going to define Software Engineering or Information Technology Engineering or Computer Science Engineering in a very different way. In a language any layman can understand.
Most of the older people fails to understand Software Engineering. They understand Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and to some extent Electronics Engineering. But most of them don?t understand Computer Science or Information Technology or Software Engineering.
I strongly suggest that we can not blame them. All the other engineering streams they can feel in and around them. But if someone needs to understand computer engineering, they must use computers. There are so many older people who don?t touch computers. For them it is just a box where people type something and do something. Everyone is doing the same in computer. Just typing but everyone is using it for different purposes. That is what is very confusing for them. Let us take an example of train. Everyone uses train for travelling from one place to the other. But the older people see their daughter who is school teacher using the computer. May be their son who is a doctor also is using the computer. So it is really confusing for them.
As I said we can not blame them. As people can not understand something where everyone uses the computer in the same way and out puts are totally different. Someone is using to test computer for the rocket propulsion. But some may be playing games.
There is another reason ?why they don?t understand it. In their childhood there was no computer. Most of them are seeing computers in their late 40s or 50s or even 60s. So it is very difficult to digest for them.
Oops! I talked too much about things. Coming back to the definition.
?Software engineering is the process of creating something which will solve your business problems or achieve a particular task using the computer as a device where we use the a keyboard and mouse to input the data[or any input device] but process the information in a such way that it will make sense to its intended users?.
