Luxury Lingerie for a Cause: Lingerie London and The Seven Bar ...

Atsuko Kudo

Last week, one of the most spectacular events in all of lingerie happened?and no, I?m not talking about the Victoria?s Secret Fashion Show. The event was Lingerie London and it brought together two powerhouses in the lingerie industry ? Agent Provocateur and Atsuko Kudo, for a good cause ? the microfinance non-profit The Seven Bar Foundation. I had the opportunity to interview Renata Black, chairwoman of Seven Bar, the day after the show and I?m so excited to share what she has to say on The Lingerie Addict. I?ve always believed lingerie can be more than just bras and panties, and here?s a wonderful example of how lingerie can do good for women all over the world. All photos are courtesy of Seven Bar. You can also view video highlights of the show here.

Atsuko Kudo

1) First of all, congratulations on another successful fashion show! Lingerie London happened just last night, and people have not stopped talking about it. I even think the #LingerieLondon hashtag was trending for a little while on Twitter. Second of all, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for TLA readers! I?m sure you must be exhausted, so let?s get right to it. I know that the last show was Lingerie New York 2010. What made you choose London for 2012?

Thank you very much! We were so excited with the event. The first thing we did was look at all the luxury lingerie designers in Europe as we wanted to make sure we worked with the strongest designer for our next Lingerie event. ?After careful consideration we realized that both of them resided in London?Agent Provocateur and Atsuko Kudo?so it was a natural move for us to have our first European Lingerie event in London.

Atsuko Kudo

2) The production value of your fashion shows is incredible?from what I?ve seen, they?re truly an experience. How long does one take to put together from start to finish?

We started working on this show over a year ago, as we wanted to make sure it was a quality event. We partnered with Total Management UK, who helped tremendously with putting the show together and making it a success.

Atsuko Kudo

3) Agent Provocateur and Atsuko Kudo are two of the most well-known and well-respected names in high-end lingerie. How did they come to be involved? Did they approach you? Did you approach them? And why these two specific brands?

Both Agent Provocateur and Atsuko Kudo are brands that we have a long-standing relationship with and have shown in the past. When we were curating the show and looking at all the best couture and luxury lingerie brands we felt that Atsuko Kudo and Agent Provocateur were truly the best in their class. Additionally, we decided to work with AP and AK because they are both completely different and we could reach two different audiences with the message of the empowerment of women.

Agent Provocateur

4) There?s a ton of press being given to all the gorgeous lingerie, but what a lot of people may not know is that this fashion show is actually charity event benefiting The Seven Bar Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. Can you tell us more about The Seven Bar Foundation? What?s its mission and what does it do?

The Seven Bar Foundation is the cause brand for the empowerment of women, with the pink ?ladder? icon as its logo. The Foundation generates funds for microfinance, enabling women to climb out of poverty and into business. We want to empower women and enable self-sufficiency?it is about giving them a hand-up, not a hand-out.

We generate funds through our Lingerie Shows as well as through cause-marketing campaigns, allowing consumers to empower women by purchasing products with the ladder icon.?We also have our very own panty line called Empowered By You, of which 20% of the profits go to the Foundation. ?All these partnerships provide Seven Bar with consistent revenue streams, so that we do not have to rely on donations to fuel our empowerment fund.

Agent Provocateur

5) There are so many causes worth funding?what made you choose microfinance as a way to make a difference?

I truly believe that microfinance is one of the strongest poverty alleviation tools today. Microfinance fosters self-sufficiency and allows women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children. With a small loan, a woman can start a successful business and send her children to school, which in turn creates more opportunities for families and inspires girls to follow in their mother?s footsteps.

Agent Provocateur

6) I love that! How did you come up with the idea of combining lingerie and activism? Did you ever think the shows would be come the kind of internationally recognized events they are today?

The idea came to me shortly after I returned from India, where I had started a grassroots microfinance program for 800 women. I was watching the Victoria?s Secret Annual Fashion Show, and saw how much attention this show received for no benefit. I thought to myself, ?Wouldn?t it be amazing if all of this attention was redirected back to the empowerment of women??

It seemed natural to me to position lingerie as inner armor for outer empowerment, and align myself with top lingerie designers who already had this idea in their DNA and had already been making women feel empowered through their clothing. Through our shows, we have been able to redirect the attention of the fashion and luxury lingerie industries to microfinance and the empowerment of women. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible with our message, so we are thrilled about the response our shows have received.

Agent Provocateur

7) Many of my readers (myself included) will probably never be able to attend one of your luxury lingerie fashion shows. How else can we get involved and help your mission to eliminate poverty?

That is where the Empowered By You panty comes in.?As I was doing these lingerie shows I was thinking, ?How can I have more people help us empower women into business?? I saw need for a perfect everyday panty that could make the transition from yoga to cocktail party, and decided to design a panty with the help of my great friend Hun Kim (former head designer of Ralph Lauren Blue Label) ? Empowered By You. As previously mentioned, this panty retails at $20 and 20% of the proceeds goes to the Foundation. Anyone who purchases a panty helps us further our goal and empower more women?whatever empowers you, empowers women everywhere. Our goal is to empower 250,000 women into business by 2020. The panty is available for purchase at?www.empoweredbyyou.com.

Empowered by You

8) Can you share with us one story of someone The Seven Bar Foundation has helped?

Yes! One of the organizations we?ve worked with is Genesis Empresarial, a micro?nance bank in Guatemala. $100,000 was lent to them, and 250 women have been impacted with an average loan size of $400. Here?s the story of one of those women ? Carmen.

Carmen started her artisan work to help create extra income for her family. She worked for her neighbor, creating beautiful woven textiles that were sold in the market place. Carmen received little of the pro?ts from the ?nal textiles but was able to slowly save extra funds to hopefully send her son to school.

When Carmen?s husband died, she had to take sole responsibility for providing for her family. With a fund from the Seven Bar Foundation, Carmen was able to buy thread and fabric supplies to open her own textile business. As the owner of her own business, Carmen was able to make a bigger income from selling her artisan work directly in the marketplace. When Carmen speaks of her loan you can see how her back straightens out as she says, ?I am able to take care of my family on my own. I can send my oldest son and daughter to school, and also use my pro?ts to ?x up our house. Now I have the resources to provide for my family.?

Renata

9) How inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing. Last question?where and when will the next Seven Bar lingerie show be?

Our phones have not stopped ringing since the final bow at Lingerie London and we are very humbled to say that we are in high demand so another show in London is looking very possible. However, we do need to get back to our roots in the US, as we have built quite the following that has yet to experience Empowered By You, so Los Angeles is also an option.

Thank you again for taking the time out of your very busy schedule for TLA?s readers, Renata! You?re doing wonderful work, and I can?t wait to hear about the next show.

OUPblog ? Blog Archive ? Watch your cancer language

By Patricia Prijatel

People who have lived through cancer just want to get on with their lives ? head into the future like everybody else, free of cancer, free of its memory. That?s why the labels others affix to us can make us especially testy.

Take, for example, the label survivor. Please. It look me a while after diagnosis to understand why this word annoyed those who have survived. Finally, when I started to be lumped into that category, I got it. The word defines us by our disease. And how can we move past this diagnosis if we are forever labeled according to it?

Some women prefer the word thriver, and I get that. It is active; it shows we are fully engaged in life. It?s a positive, affieming word. Survivor, by contrast, means we exist. We didn?t die. Not dying is a good thing ? an extremely good thing ? but it is not the only thing. If it is, then we are not really living, are we?

Still, I need no label. I am Pat. I had breast cancer and I, thank God, got over it.

What do we call survivors of heart attacks? I call them Hank and Herb and Mike. What do we call survivors of strokes? I call them Jean and Gary. Cancer need not be in a category of its own ? the big scary disease. Those of us who have weathered its storms want to move beyond it. We?re wives, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, friends, lovers. We?re proud of these roles and find these labels wonderful. They make us fit in, feel a part of the world, of society, of our families, our communities.

Survivor sets us apart, and we?re tired of being special in a cancer sort of way.

We?re also writers, doctors, teachers, editors, students, artists, photographers, computer specialists, managers, volunteers, and tote a laundry list of other accomplishments. We have worked to earn these labels and encourage you to see us for what we have done, not what was done to us.

Then there is the issue of our courageous battle. I had several people tell me that I was so courageous while I went through treatment. Really? It is not courage to put one foot in front of another and just do what you need to do, usually while terrified and confused. Some of us do it with less complaint than others, but that is not courage. It is just good luck: a positive attitude, perhaps a better diagnosis, smoother response to treatment, or a support system that keeps us grounded.

To me, courage refers to soldiers in Afghanistan, or the person who jumps into a raging river to save a woman whose boat has capsized, or politicians voting for what they know is right but might not get them reelected.

And, frankly, it applies more to our caregivers like my husband, who never let me say, ?I have cancer,? correcting me to, ?You had cancer.? Or the parents of children with cancer who have to fight for proper care and deal with the financial hit while supporting a confused and sick child. Or the children watching their mother lose her hair and reminding her how beautiful she is and how much they love her, all the while hiding their own fear.

The problem with calling cancer patients courageous, again, is that it sets us apart from everybody else. We are the Person with Cancer. How scary. How tragic.

Does an obituary say a person died of a courageous battle with heart disease? Why not? Why is cancer elevated to such a stage? And why does it bother us?

It?s a problem because when you are constantly told you need courage to get through this journey, it makes the road seem that much rougher, the climb that much steeper, the destination that much less clear. What?s more, what happens if we don?t beat the disease? Were we not brave enough? Did we not fight hard enough? Are we the biggest of the big losers?

All we want is to be normal again. To be just a person who once got sick but hopes not to get sick again. Someone who is trying to move on, leaving cancer far behind, kicking dust in its nasty old face.

South Dakota Politics: Teleology & Efficient Causation in Biology

If you want to know what a college is supposed to be, spend some time on the third floor of the Tech Center at NSU. On Friday Professor Schaff and I sat in my office discussing the difference between the concepts of the cosmos and of the universe and the limits on legitimate teleological explanations in biology. A third colleague of ours joined in the discussion and, in effect, so did a fourth: the cosmos/universe distinction was put forth by someone who was not present.

As I understand the first question, both terms stand for the whole of things in space and time (excluding alternative universes or a God who stands outside space and time). To call this whole a cosmos is to imply that it is ordered and coherent in the same way as a beating human heart is ordered and coherent. To call the whole a universe is to avoid any such suggestion. The universe may be a disordered mess without any hierarchy or coherence of any kind. I apologize to my absent colleague if I got this wrong.

I am not entirely comfortable with the terminology. The term universe can also imply coherent order just as the term university does. However, I accept the distinction and I think it is important, though I will not tip my hand on this one. The suggestion was made that a cosmos has to involve teleology, which is to say that its order must be understood in terms of the ends or goals which that order serves. At that point I stated that teleology is indeed involved in biological explanations.

There the discussion shifted to a more specific question: taking Darwinian theory seriously, what counts as a telos or goal in organic activities? It was put forth that survival is a Darwinian telos. I argued to the contrary and what follows is my argument after a little thinking.

Aristotle distinguished four basic kinds of explanations, of which only two concern us here. Consider the flight of an arrow from the bow to the target. An efficient explanation goes like this: the energy imparted by the bow string to the arrow was sufficient to carry the arrow in the right direction and far enough to reach the bulls eye. A teleological explanation focuses on the intentions of the archer: he hit the target because that is what he was aiming at. The two kinds of explanations are not in any way at odds with one another; they are simply answers to different questions.

Although this position is not uncontroversial in the philosophy of biology, I think that teleological explanations are entirely appropriate and indeed essential in biology. The growth of an animal from its original cell is an end-directed process. Countless subordinate processes are constantly being redirected toward the telos: a mature adult. Likewise, when a bull elk pursues a cow in heat, his actions are guided by a pre-programed goal. The philosopher of biology Ernst Mayr called such program-guided processes teleomatic.

Now for the question: is survival among the teloi, if not the telos, of biological processes? I say no. First, survival is purely subordinate to successful reproduction in Darwinian biology. Secondly, the bull is neither trying to survive nor trying to produce offspring. What he is trying to do is mate. That is the telos of his amorous actions. Okay, but isn't reproduction the reason for his actions? Yes, but this is an efficient rather than a teleological explanation.

An efficient explanation begins with some action or event and works backward in time to articulate the causes that produced it. The arrow flew because first the string pushed it. The string pushed it because first the archer pulled it back and then let it go. It doesn't matter where you start in time, with the arrow, the string, or the biceps, efficient explanation works backwards in time.

A teleological explanation proceeds forward in time from the action to the goal that the action was intended to achieve. The archer releases the string at time T1 because he intended the arrow to reach the target at T2.

The bull's amorous pursuit is explained teleologically by the goal that he is trying to achieve in the near future: mating. If we could read the elk's DNA coherently, we would find a set of genetic information adding to a schema that guides mating behavior, predator avoidance, etc. What we wouldn't find is language coding for survival of the individual or the species.

How do survival and successful reproduction figure in as explanations? The bull behaves as he does because his father behaved that way. Every existing organism is the offspring of an unbroken line of successful breeders. Natural selection is efficient causation, not teleological causation.

This distinction is rather important. Critics of Darwinism frequently argue that it is brutish because it reduces all values to the mere struggle to survive and reproduce. This is flat wrong. Fitness for survival and reproduction are not values in any sense in the theory. They are efficient forces that explain how the forms of the various organisms emerge and are sustained.

I think that I and my colleagues came to some agreement on this, but as a result of that conversation I have clarified my own thoughts. If you want to know what a college really is, that would be it.

When you and boss split, social media can be an issue

By Bob Sullivan

If you and your company get an ugly divorce, does your company get to keep the friends?

A controversial court ruling last week has shined a light on this made-in-the-digital age problem: Who owns Twitter followers, Facebook friends and LinkedIn connections when employers and employees part ways? With personal and professional lives mingled online as never before, a distinctly 21st Century fight is brewing over who owns your friendships.

A ?federal judge in Pennsylvania on Oct. 4 rejected a claim by Linda Eagle that her prior employee had illegally accessed her LinkedIn account after she left her company, Edcomm. Workers there changed Eagle's password after her departure, preventing her from accessing critical contacts and, she claimed, damaged her ability to find new work.?

But the judge dismissed most elements of her lawsuit, giving fuel to those who argue that social media groomed at work belongs to employers.

"The initial outcome of the case is very troubling," said Bradley Shear, a Washington, D.C.,-area lawyer who specializes in social media. It opens the door for employers to claim ownership of any social account -- even personal accounts -- because Eagle's account was created under her own name, he warned. "It demonstrates there's a need for people to become much more educated about this."

Other court rulings have hinted that courts might be inclined to see things the employer's way.? Earlier this year, a federal California court allowed a publication named PhoneDog to proceed with a lawsuit against former writer Noah Kravitz, who had amassed 17,000 Twitter followers while working there.

Kravitz claimed the followers were his, but PhoneDog sued for ownership in 2011, and the judge denied a motion to dismiss the case in a February ruling ? a positive sign for PhoneDog?s legal argument. Two other recent cases also sided with firms making ownership claims on social media contacts.

Eric Goldman, a law professor at Santa Clara University, cautioned that each of these cases is "incredibly fact specific," and none establishes a universal principle that could be widely applied. Still, workers should be on notice that their employer getting their ?friends in the divorce is not so far-fetched.

"People should learn from this that it's dangerous to mix business with pleasure," he said.

In many ways, the "who owns the connections and the conversations" issue is unique to social media and the digital age.? In the past, there was never any question that a public relations professional was speaking on behalf of a company, and that communication was company-owned ?? ?as were the contact lists. But what of a long-time flack who arrives at a new firm with a long list of her own Twitter followers, and who writes messages using that account that are decidedly personal?? Who owns those messages, and those contacts? The issue is as murky as most employees' work-life balance.

?Many of these accounts have 'mingled interests,' " Goldman said. ?That makes things difficult.?

In fact, the very nature of social media means the accounts don't really work unless they have a touch of personality. Tweeted press releases aren't interesting on Twitter; personal wit is regarded above all, and encouraged at every smart firm with a social media presence.?

On the other hand, it's reasonable to think of LinkedIn contacts as akin to customer lists, which are clearly proprietary and belong to employers as intellectual property. For decades, firms have claimed ownership of client lists (and employees have tried sneak out the door with them). If a LinkedIn account is little more than a list of business connections that are directly related to a job, why wouldn't a company claim it?

Of course, fights over Rolodexes aren?t new ? but old-fashioned piles of business cards make a poor analogy for a long-curated group of Twitter followers. ?Besides, users who have a developed a personal relationship with a social media creator aren't likely to be much use to a company which takes over an account, Goldman noted.

?You can grab the Rolodex, but you can?t really grab the relationship?? he said.

There's also the subtle "you are nothing without me" argument. When television anchor and early Twitter adopter Rick Sanchez left CNN, he had a follower list of 150,000. Without CNN, Sanchez would not have compiled such a following, and when he left, observers imagined a brewing controversy. A fight was averted when CNN Sanchez keep the list as long as he changed his Twitter handle, from @ricksanchezcnn to @ricksancheznews .

LinkedIn hasn't offered a lot of guidance in the issue, but in a brief statement to NBC News, the company seemed to suggest that it might take up the fight on behalf of users at some point.

"We don't know the specific facts and circumstances of the relationships or agreements between Ms. Eagle and her former employer, nor are we parties to the lawsuit, so we can't comment on it specifically," said LinkedIn spokesman Hani Durzy. "However, LinkedIn prides itself on being a members-first organization, and in general we believe that a member's professional profile belongs to them.?

Other digital-era issues offer conflicting notions.? In the United States, employees have no right to privacy over emails they write at work, even if they are using personal email accounts. Employers are within their rights to employ snooping software to watch everything workers do with company computers.? That might suggest any Facebook or Twitter work done by an employee on company property belongs to the company. On the other hand, there's a long history of domain name confusion that sides with workers. Employees who register company domains in their own names, for example, often end up with an awful lot of leverage after they leave the company -- they can redirect the domain, for example.

To Shear, the lawyer specializing in social media, that leads to a practical question for companies that might be inclined to make claims on social media accounts.

"LinkedIn is an external system. Why are you are putting resources into an external system that you don't have control over?? Companies prefer their own email to Gmail for this reason," he said.?

One critical element of the Eagle case is that she had shared her password with a coworker, who updated the LinkedIn page for her. That put the company in a good position to make a claim -- it could change the password, lock her out and ask questions later.? So should employees refuse such password sharing? Some companies compel users to do so, though increasingly state legislatures are considering laws making the practice illegal. ?Meanwhile, most social networks -- including LinkedIn -- say it's against their terms of service to share passwords.

There may already be existing laws that cover a lot of this controversy. Non-compete and non-solicitation agreements -- which prevent workers from contacting clients after exiting a firm -- prevent a lot of the issues that businesses are really concerned about when they make social media contact claims.? Still, those are often unenforceable, particularly in California, which has broad employment right laws. That has Shear and Goldman concerned that future employment agreements will contain the broadest possible provisions, with companies seeking rights to all online relationships while workers are in their employ.

"That would be an egregious overreach," Goldman warned.

It would also kill the spirit of social media, as popular Twitter posters would disappear overnight, each time they change jobs.

"In the end, we as readers will be the losers, because we won't be able to find the people we are looking for," he said

There is one saving grace in this discussion: Despite our pride of amassing a few thousand friends or followers, Goldman points out that most social media accounts are not so valuable that they are worth fighting over in court.

"The economics don't support litigation," he said. "How much is an account with 17,000 followers worth?? At $1 a follower, that's $17,000 -- that would hardly even get (the lawsuit) filed."

RED TAPE WRESTLING TIPS
Both Shear and Goldman stressed that companies need to have very specific social media policies -- pre-nuptial agreements, if you will -- specifying who gets what when the inevitable breakup arrives.?

For workers who are concerned, Shear offers three quick tips.

  • Make sure the email used to set up the social networking account is a personal email that you control, not a corporate email address that can be cut off -- and could be used as evidence of ownership in litigation. Also, use personal contact information, such as a home number and address.
  • Make sure the name on the account is personal -- Sally Smith, not Sally_XYZCompany. Finally, use a personal photograph, rather than a company logo, in the profile picture.

Two new games hit the Tegra Zone -- Sumioni and Razor Salvation

Tegra Zone

If you've got a Tegra 3 device, like the Nexus 7, there are two great new games available -- Sumioni and Razor Salvation. Both are Tegra 3 optimized, meaning that the gameplay, textures and physics will be killer, When developers get together with Nvidia to build these Tegra-optimized apps, the experience goes beyond what anyone expects on a mobile device.

We've got our hands on the apps, and will be giving them a solid look in the next few days, but in the meantime hit the jump to see some screenshots and descriptions. And of course, the download links.

LA SOLIDARIDAD: TRO on cyberlaw big victory for freedom of ...

By?Norman Bordadora, Christine O. Avenda?o

?The first victory of the people and of freedom of expression.?

That was how Sen. Teofisto Guingona III described the Supreme Court?s issuance Tuesday of a?temporary restraining order?(TRO) suspending implementation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act for 120 days while the high tribunal decides whether the law violates civil liberties.

The court in a unanimous resolution directed respondents led by President Benigno Aquino and top administration officials to comment within 10 days on 15 petitions filed by Guingona and journalists? groups, bloggers and netizens seeking to scrap a harsh penalty for online libel of up to 12 years in prison.

In its en banc meeting, the high tribunal set oral arguments on Jan. 15 on the case, according to the minute resolution. It said that the order was effective immediately. It said that for 120 days, the administration should refrain from enforcing the law.

The announcement of the TRO was met with jubilation by some 500 protesters massed in front of the court. Wearing black and bearing placards, the protesters called for the impeachment of Mr. Aquino for signing the cybercrime law, which took effect on Oct. 3, and chanted ?no to cyber martial law.?

?The administration will always respect the legal processes that are issued by the court,? Palace deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte told reporters.

She called the court action a ?provisional remedy? amid intense opposition to the law. She said this should not be construed as ?judgment on the merits.?

Senate?s lone dissenter

?A TRO against the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 is the first victory of the people and of freedom of expression,? said Guingona, the lone dissenter in the Senate to the measure.

?For a court to issue a TRO unanimously is a strong message of its belief that the dangers and fears of the people are real and must be addressed,? he said.

The respondents included Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., and Philippine National Police Director General Nicanor Bartolome.

The issuance of the TRO came as the Department of Justice (DOJ) was preparing to draft the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the law slammed by many sectors for including libel as a cybercrime, among others.

Saying the DOJ operated ?under the framework of the rule of law,? De Lima said she would abide by the high court order which, she noted, arose from ?an exercise of the power of judicial review.??

?We respect and we will abide by it,? De Lima, who was in Zamboanga City, said in a text message.

De Lima said that ?in due time,? the DOJ would present formally before the high court the arguments outlined in the ?historic? forum on the cyberlaw, which was conducted on Tuesday at the Land Bank of the Philippines building in Manila.

?Our advocacy for a safe cyberspace and interdiction of organized crime will continue,?? De Lima said.

Word on the high court?s issuance of a TRO came as the DOJ, along with the Department of Science and Technology, ended its one-day forum aimed at clarifying misconceptions on the controversial law.

The forum was called so that stakeholders could provide inputs on the ?collaborative?? IRR to be drafted with the DOJ and other concerned government agencies.

Assistant Justice Secretary Geronimo Sy has said some of the provisions that petitioners said were unconstitutional were ?the least of our worries.??

He said that it was not true that the jail time for those found guilty of online libel would be up to 12 years, adding that the maximum jail term was eight years.

Sy also said that contrary to claims by some groups, the provision that would restrict or block websites was ?not a takedown? website policy.

He said that applying this section was not easy considering there were certain conditions needed such as ?clear and present danger? to necessitate the restriction or blocking of websites.

He also explained the tedious process involved in seeking this restriction.

Congress will wait

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said that with the TRO, bills introduced to amend the cybercrime law would have to wait until the court decided on its constitutionality.

?[The TRO] does not stop us from amending the law if there is a necessity but in my case, I suggest that we wait for the Supreme Court to make a decision so that we will know what are the defects that they want us to correct. We are not infallible people,? Enrile told reporters.

Sen. Edgardo Angara, one of the authors of the law, shared Enrile?s position. ?Let?s take a pause out of respect for the Supreme Court, after all the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of any legal question.?

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who earlier said she expected the Supreme Court to strike down as unconstitutional the cyberlaw, welcomed the court move. ?This would be a landmark decision.? It will concern the right to free speech in the digital age,? Santiago said.

Kabataan Rep. Raymond Palatino said that Congress should take the 120-day respite? as its ?cue? to expedite the approval of repealing or proposing ammendatory bills to the cybercrime law.

May not be needed

?There is material time to amend the law. What is needed is the support of the Congress leadership,? Palatino said.

?It?s possible if certified by the President as urgent, or if the House leadership considers it a priority measure,? said ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio.

Quezon Rep. Lorenzo ?Erin? Ta?ada III said that the proposed changes in Congress might not be necessary. ?There is a possibility that those particular sections that are being questioned may be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Hence, amendments may not be necessary,? Ta?ada said.?With reports from TJ Burgonio and Gil C. Cabacungan

Everything you need to know about new LinkedIn Company Pages

It?s been a busy time for LinkedIn, with a series of announcements over the last few weeks including notifications and?endorsements.

And it?s been no secret that LinkedIn was on the verge of announcing new pages for companies too as revealed in a blog written about a month ago. Since then, a number of companies have been testing the new pages including?Philips,?Citi,?HP?and?Dell.

And last week, the new pages were opened up to all businesses on the network.

So what has changed and what do you need to know? We?ve pulled all the must read information in one place for your viewing pleasure.

What?s new?

The main reason behind launching new company pages is to make it easier for users to access information about businesses on the platform. ?As LinkedIn says in the launch blog post:

For members, this means easier access to the information you want about the companies you care about. For companies, this means a more powerful way to build relationships with your target audience on LinkedIn.

There is a lot to like in the new pages. Here are the main differences between the new and old pages:

  • A new streamlined design that makes it much easier to navigate
  • Company updates (essentially status updates) are now much more prominent which ties into the notification roll-out mentioned above
  • LinkedIn continues it?s push into mobile by making pages available across all types of devices and apps
  • You can now add an image associated with your company, much like photos on individual profiles
  • Companies can now?companies share status updates and job opportunities with specific members on LinkedIn
  • Navigation more prominent, helping businesses to highlight products, services and careers opportunities

Why should you care?

LinkedIn is still widely regarded as the network for business people across the world. It has 160 million registered users and yet is still often overlooked in social strategies. B2B companies should certainly be thinking seriously about how LinkedIn can be used but, even for consumer brands, the network has a lot to offer, especially from a corporate PR standpoint or recruitment.

I know many journalists who will go straight to LinkedIn to source company information and check up on company spokespeople. So making sure your individual and corporate profiles are updated is important.

Increasingly, following the ?split? with Twitter and as seen with the launch of notifications, LinkedIn is ramping up the way the network can be used to share and distribute content which should have an important role to play in any B2B content marketing or PR strategy.

This is also maximised by the impact on search results. LinkedIn pages generally rank very well in search. For example, when you search for EML Wildfire, our LinkedIn page currently comes up in third place, ahead of our Facebook page and even Google+!

What should I do now?

Now that new pages are live, there are a few things you should do right now to make the most of the new features. Here?s five simple steps that shouldn?t take you too long:

1. Upload a picture

We all know that pictures are worth a thousand words, so make use of the additional screen real estate that LinkedIn now gives you for images. This is in addition to your logo. The image can be PNG, JPEG or GIF and can be a maximum size of 2MB.

It is very easy to upload in the ?edit profile? section. Once uploaded, you can crop your image to 646 x 220 pixels.

Don?t forget to push the ?publish? button when you are done ? it?s kinda hidden in the top right of the edit screen.

2. Post content

If you don?t do this already, then now is the time to start. Company status updates are now front and centre on your page and, with the launch of notifications, status updates are clearly an area LinkedIn is looking to push.

So make sure you are posting regular content, whether that is blogs, company updates, jobs or just industry information that could be of interest to your followers.

Social sharing is increasingly a factor in search so this could help your SEO strategy. Encourage your employees to share content on their individual LinkedIn profiles too.

3. Create targeted audiences

If you are familiar with LinkedIn advertising, then the ability to target your status updates to certain followers will be familiar. It?s now a really powerful addition to pages.

Essentially you can now create certain segments of followers based on company size, geography, industry or job title and ensure that your updates are only seen by those specific individuals.

This will make your content more targeted and relevant. As we?ve said already, your content is now more prominent than other information about your company on the page so it?s worth paying attention to this.

4. Check out your stats

LinkedIn has made the stats about your followers and your page easier to access. So if you?ve never looked at these, now is a good opportunity.

You?ll be amazed at some of the information here. If only Twitter would follow LinkedIn and Facebook down the route of providing more insight about followers.

While you are at it, you should look at your social referrer stats in Google Analytics (other web analytics packages are available). See what traffic you are getting from LinkedIn and see if, by increasing your activity on LinkedIn, you see an increase in this metric.

5. Time for a spring clean?

While you are at it, it?s worth checking all the other information about your company on your LinkedIn page. It?s easy for this to get out of date.

Check the company description, product and services list, employee information and don?t forget to post any jobs you might be advertising at the moment.

We?d love to hear your experiences using the new pages and, of course, don?t forget to follow the EML Wildfire page here!
