Yaalon: Iran doesn?t see a real military threat

(JTA) -- Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon fears that mixed messages are leading Iran to believe it does not face a real military threat from the outside world.?

"We have an exchange of views, including with our friends in the United States, who in our opinion, are in part responsible for this feeling in Iran," he told Israel's 100FM radio station Friday, according to The Jerusalem Post.

"There are many cracks in the ring closing tighter on Iran. We criticize this," he said, also singling out United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for traveling to Tehran this week. Ban attended the Non-Aligned Movement Summit held in Tehran. During his talk there, he criticized Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's rejection of the Jewish state's right to exist as well as his Holocaust denial.

Israel believes that Iran's nuclear installations -- which are not open to international inspection -- are developing a nuclear weapons program. Tehran insists that the research is meant for domestic power means. Recent weeks have seen increased speculation as to whether Israel would launch a preemptive attack against Iran's nuclear installations, which are scattered around the country.?

"Revolution" plans bike-powered screening

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - NBC's upcoming drama "Revolution" - which imagines a future where all sources of energy have disappeared - will help viewers get in the mood with a bicycle-powered screening next week.

The screening Tuesday in New York City is one of ten screenings planned around the country before the show's premiere. Cyclists including series star Tim Guineee will pedal to generate enough energy for the screening.

Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to walk or bike to the event, at Hudson River Park's Pier 57. In a Portlandian touch, bikes messengers will be available. (Seating for the screenings is first come, first served.)

"Revolution," produced by J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau and Eric Kripke, premieres Monday, September 17 at 10 p.m., following "The Voice."

"Revolution" will also screen in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, Wilmington, and Seattle.

    Cellphone tracking tracks the current position of a cellular telephone even for your move. To locate the phone, it must give off at least the roaming signal to contact an upcoming nearby antenna tower, but the process does not want an active call. GSM localization is then done by multilateration with regards to the signal strength to adjacent antenna masts. In order to route calls to your phone the cell towers listen for a signal sent from the phone and talk terms which tower is best able to communicate with all the phone. As the phone changes location, the towers monitor the signal and the phone is switched to a different tower as appropriate. By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple towers a general location of a phone can be determined. The technology of tracking is based on measuring power levels and antenna patterns and uses the concept that a cell always communicates wirelessly with one of the closest base stations, so if you know which base station the phone communicates with, you know that the phone is around the respective base station. Advanced systems determine the sector in which the cell resides and roughly estimate also the distance to the base station. Further estimate can be done by interpolating signals between adjacent antenna towers. Qualified services may achieve a precision of down to 50 meters in urban areas where mobile traffic and density of antenna towers (base stations) is sufficiently high. Rural and desolate areas may see miles between base stations and therefore determine locations less precisely.   Operational purpose.   In order to route calls to a phone the cell towers listen for a signal sent from the phone and negotiate which tower is best able to communicate with the phone. As the phone changes location, the antenna towers monitor the signal and the phone is roamed to an adjacent tower as correct. By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple antenna towers a general location of a phone can be approximately set. Other means is the antenna pattern that supports angular purpose and phase favouritism. Newer phones may also allow the tracking of the phone even when randy and not active in a phone call -. This results from the roaming operations that perform hand over of the phone from one base station to another. The rule of tracking is based on GSM localization.   GLOBAL SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATION (GSM).   GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is the most popular standard for cellphone in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, prices that 82 % of the global mobile market uses the standard. GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquitousness makes international roaming very common between cellphone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its harbingers in this both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus is named a second generation (2G) cellphone system. This has also meant that digital communication was easy to establish into the system. The ubiquity of the GSM standard is definitely an advantage to both consumers (who benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without switching phones) and also to network operators (who can choose equipment from any of the many sellers implementing GSM). GSM also initiated a low cost (to the network carrier) alternative to voice calls, the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"), which is now supported on other mobile standards also. Another advantage is that the standard includes one worldwide Emergency phone number ; 112This makes it easier for international travelers to connect to emergency services without knowing the local emergency number. Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capablenesses, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release' 99introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).   GSM security.   GSM was designed with a restrained level of security. The system was designed to authenticate the subscriber using a pre-shared key and challenge-response. Communications between the subscriber and the base station can be encrypted. The development of UMTS introduces an optional USIM, that uses a longer authentication key to give greater security, as well as reciprocally authenticating the network and the user whereas GSM only authenticates the user to the network (and not the other way around). The security model therefore offers confidentiality and certification, but limited authorization capablenesses, and no non-repudiation. GSM uses several cryptological algorithms for security.   Global Positioning System.   The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The GPS uses a configuration of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth&nbsp;Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, which enable GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity (including direction). GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defense.     Being a ?Relationship / Marriage? counselor I focused more on the parts of the book (?The Defining Decade?) that dealt with relationship aspects of being in your twenties.? Below are some of the things that Dr. Jay discusses in her book.

    One of Dr. Jay?s points when she talks about finding a strong long term relationship is that even though there are certain, social pressures, as well as biological realities, in terms of baring children, the twenty year old should not be driven to be married by the age of thirty.? Her point being, deciding in haste is what makes the divorce statistics as high as they are.

    Some people say that living together is a great way to decide whether or not a couple should be married and yet the statistics do not indicate that this is true.? I know that I?ve always doubted these statistics as they didn?t make sense to me; and then I heard more explanation:

    The book talks about couples who live together and the impact of that on marriages.? Couples who live together often drift into marriage because living together is easier. It is just simpler to keep clothes in one place rather than two; or it saves going back and forth between houses to be with each other, so folks decide to live together.? The decision is not made from commitment but based on convenience. ??Folks often get married when one member of the couple decides to they want to be married (usually, but not always the woman).? When living together becomes driven by the ?drifting? into the move often time?s couples don?t ask the hard questions necessary to clear up before a couple gets married.? If sharing a place does not happen because of convenience but because it is specifically seen as a trial period, a chance to get a closer look and feel about the relationship then co cohabiting can be an effective strategy

    Dr. Jay also goes into what she calls ?The Big Five? personality characteristics.? The author identifies: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism on a ?high? ?Low Scale?.

    These are characteristics on which couples can assess their emotional compatibility.

    Scientist sees Arctic ice loss firsthand

    ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The extent of sea ice in the Arctic has reached a record low, according to data released Aug. 26 by the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

    A University of Delaware marine scientist can confirm some of that ice loss firsthand. In a short video he filmed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPNKXGIyQlc), Andreas Muenchow, aboard the Canadian icebreaker Henry Larsen, shows the ice-free sea off Petermann Fjord that he and his colleagues were sailing in -- an area that for ages had been covered by floating ice shelves.

    "But no more," notes Muenchow in the video. He and his research team from UD were working in Nares Strait, between Greenland and Canada, to recover an ocean and sea ice observing array they had moored there in 2009 as part of his National Science Foundation research project.

    "What we see in Nares Strait is some of the hardest and thickest ice leaving the Arctic where some of it is replaced by much thinner ice that has not been hardened by many sequential freeze/melt cycles," Muenchow says. "The harder thicker ice is called 'multi-year' ice, distinct from first-year ice, and the slow disappearance of this multi-year ice from northern Canada and Greenland is one major factor causing the ice extent to become steadily smaller over the last 40 years or so. Most climate models predicted this scenario, but we are 30 to 40 years ahead of the predicted schedule with regard to the ice cover in the Arctic."

    According to NSIDC, the extent of Arctic sea ice on August 13 was 5.09 million square kilometers (1.97 million square miles). That figure is 2.69 million square kilometers (1.04 million square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average extent for the date, and 483,000 square kilometers (186,000 square miles) below the previous record low for the date, which occurred in 2007.

    During his Arctic research mission, Muenchow observed firsthand Petermann Glacier and the giant ice island, twice the size of Manhattan, that broke off from the glacier on July 17, which he reported in his "Icy Seas" blog.

    On Aug. 24, Muenchow blogged that a large ice island about 10 square kilometers (4 square miles) -- about three times the size of Central Park -- had broken off from nearby Steensby Gletscher.

    The instruments recovered by Muenchow and his research team will provide data on ocean currents, temperature, salinity and ice thickness at better than hourly intervals since 2009, including the passage of the ice island equivalent to four times the size of Manhattan that broke off Petermann Glacier in 2010.

    Little evidence supports autism treatment options in adolescents

    ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Vanderbilt University researchers studying interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism are reporting that there is insufficient evidence to support findings, good or bad, for the therapies currently used.

    Although the prevalence of autism is on the rise, much remains to be discovered when it comes to interventions for this population, the researchers concluded.

    "Overall, there is very little evidence in all areas of care for adolescents and young adults with autism, and it is urgent that more rigorous studies be developed and conducted," said Melissa McPheeters, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center and senior author of the report, a systematic review of therapies published by the Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

    Zachary Warren, Ph.D., director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, said, "There are growing numbers of adolescents and adults with autism in need of substantial support. Without a stronger evidence base, it is very hard to know which interventions will yield the most meaningful outcomes for individuals with autism and their families."

    Key findings:

    The researchers systematically screened more than 4,500 studies and reviewed the 32 studies published from January 1980 to December 2011 on therapies for people ages 13 to 30 with autism spectrum disorders. They focused on the outcomes, including harms and adverse effects, of interventions, including medical, behavioral, educational and vocational.

    ? Some evidence revealed that treatments could improve social skills and educational outcomes such as vocabulary or reading, but the studies were generally small and had limited follow-up.

    ? Limited evidence supports the use of medical interventions in adolescents and young adults with autism. The most consistent findings were identified for the effects of antipsychotic medications on reducing problem behaviors that tend to occur with autism, such as irritability and aggression. Harms associated with medications included sedation and weight gain.

    ? Only five articles tested vocational interventions, all of which suggested that certain vocational interventions may be effective for certain individuals, but each study had significant flaws that limited the researchers' confidence in their conclusions. The researchers' findings on vocational interventions will be featured in the Aug. 27 issue of Pediatrics.

    As recently as the 1970s, autism was believed to affect just one in 2,000 children, but newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder. Boys with autism outnumber girls 5-to-1, which estimates that one in 54 boys in the United States have autism.

    "With more and more youth with autism leaving high school and entering the adult world, there is urgent need for evidence-based interventions that can improve their quality of life and functioning," said Julie Lounds Taylor, Ph.D., assistant professor of Pediatrics and Special Education and lead author of the report.

    Additional investigators on this report include Jeremy Veenstra-VanderWeele, M.D., assistant professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Pharmacology and Kennedy Center investigator; Dwayne Dove, M.D., Ph.D., fellow in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics; Nila Sathe, M.S., M.L.I.S., program manager, Institute for Medicine and Public Health; and Rebecca Jerome, M.L.I.S., M.P.H., assistant director, Eskind Biomedical Library.

    Their research, published in the report, Interventions for Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Effective Health Care Program and conducted through Vanderbilt's Evidence-Based Practice Center.
