Chart shows delegates won by GOP presidential candidates since January

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama called Mitt Romney to congratulate him on winning the Republican nomination on Wednesday, just as the Democrat's campaign opened a new critique of Romney by focusing attention on his economic record as governor of Massachusetts.

The president told Romney "he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America's future," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said. Romney's campaign said the call was "brief and cordial." Both men wished each other's families well during the upcoming race.

Romney's primary win in Texas on Tuesday pushed him past the 1,144-delegate threshold he needed to claim the nomination.

Obama took the formal step of congratulating his opponent even as his team looked to shift to the Massachusetts story under Romney. Romney's campaign, meanwhile, was bringing attention to failed stimulus projects under Obama and federal money given to green energy companies like Solyndra, a solar firm that received hundreds of millions of dollars from the government only to go bankrupt.

The competing attack-lines came as Romney pivoted from a long primary slog to the Republican nomination and a new summertime window to sway voters who have not yet fully tuned into the presidential campaign. Romney hopes to present himself as a worthy replacement for Obama who can help revitalize a slow-moving economy, the most important issue for voters.

The country is "just beginning a general election, we've gone through a primary ... not a lot of people focus time on the characteristics of a new candidate like myself, and people will get to know me better. My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished," Romney said in an interview on Fox News that aired Wednesday but was taped over the weekend.

For months, Obama and his allies have signaled plans to target Romney's Massachusetts record, with advisers noting that the state's economy lagged in job creation and saw an increase in debt while he was governor from 2003-2007. The critique will build upon a line of attack this month of Romney's record at private equity firm Bain Capital, which Obama's team contends led to job losses and bankrupt companies even while Bain profited.

"There's nothing that Gov. Romney did either in the private sector that created jobs or in the public sector that distinguished himself as a job creator," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Republicans contend that Obama's critique of the Bain record will backfire because it will give voters the impression that he is anti-business. The focus on Obama's green energy record, including Energy Department funding for companies like Solyndra, gives Romney a chance to rebut Bain because Republicans say Obama essentially played the role of venture capitalist by investing government money in green energy companies.

On Tuesday, Romney raised money in Las Vegas with Donald Trump, the real estate mogul who has stoked doubts about whether Obama was born in America. It was the start of a weeklong push to raise millions of dollars during a West Coast trip designed to help Romney bring in as much cash as possible ahead of a ramped-up campaign schedule later this summer.

The former Massachusetts governor was looking to take advantage of his official claiming of the nomination, a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals. According to the Associated Press count, Romney surpassed the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination by winning 105 delegates in the Texas primary, pushing his total to 1,191 delegates.

Romney must now fire up conservatives who still doubt him while persuading swing voters that he can do a better job fixing the nation's struggling economy than Obama. In Obama, he faces a well-funded candidate with a proven campaign team in an election that will be heavily influenced by the economy.

Romney has scheduled fundraisers this week in wealthy California enclaves like Hillsborough, near San Francisco, and Beverly Hills. He has at least one major fundraising event every day for the rest of the week, as well as a series of smaller events.

PARIS (AP) ? Rafael Nadal started his bid for a record seventh French Open championship with a mostly mistake-free 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 victory over 111th-ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy.

The second-seeded Nadal made only 18 unforced errors Tuesday, fewer than half as many as his opponent.

The Spaniard improved to 46-1 at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009, against Robin Soderling.

Nadal won the French Open every year from 2005-08, and again in 2010 and 2011. Bjorn Borg is the only other man with six titles at Roland Garros.

Nadal also is seeking his 11th Grand Slam trophy overall, which would pull him even with Borg and Rod Laver for fourth most in tennis history.

Gamify your sweat and make films more exciting

Getting really sweaty is not normally a good thing. But imagine if doing so could make the film you're watching more exciting - or even change what happens next. Technology firm Sensum is launching a smartphone app that will use your sweat to make life far more entertaining.

Sensum pairs a wrist-mounted galvanic skin response (GSR) sensor, made by Dublin company Shimmer Research, via Bluetooth to a smartphone with the Sensum app installed. The sensor measures how much you sweat while watching different videos, and sends the data to the smartphone which then uploads the data to the Sensum website. Then you can play back the video overlaid with a graph that shows just what made you jump.

You are also given a score for how much you engaged with what you saw, which you can compare to others'. That gamification aspect is addictive. "You're getting rewarded for taking part," says Sensum's Gawain Morrison. It works - I found myself wanting to be sweatier for the first time ever, just so that I could feel more emotionally sensitive.

But the data isn't just collected and gamified, it can be used to change what you're watching in real time too. Last year Morrison's Belfast-based production company Filmtrip launched their interactive short horror film Unsound at SXSW, which responded to the audience's excitement - measured by their GSR and heart rate - by making the footage even gorier and the music more tense. "The physiology of the user shapes their entertainment experience," says Morrison.

Now that the technology has become mobile it can be rolled out on a much broader scale. "The mobile version allows us so much more room," says Morrison. "You can do proper deep-level immersion stuff and physiology encryption. If you go to a film with one of these devices on you're going to come out of that with data unique to you. For an alternate reality game tied into a film you then have totally personal physiological encryption."

Morrison foresees the platform being used to unlock content - be it games, comic books or extra plot - that is personally tailored for each viewer. "You're getting a personal reward for engaging with the film," he says. "All the further content is led by how you engaged with it."

Bringing it back to its origins, though, Filmtrip is working with science-fiction novelist Ian McDonald on the script of a feature-length film with multiple endings where physiological markers from the audience will change the film's music, special effects, character paths and even the ending.

Facebook stock up slightly in public debut

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook is trading up 8 percent Friday, as investors seek to put a dollar value on the company that turned online social networking into a global cultural phenomenon.

Earlier, the company's 28-year-old CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, smiled as he rang the opening bell from Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. Surrounded by cheering Facebook employees and wearing his signature hoodie, the 28-year-old pushed the button that signals the opening of the stock market in New York. The morning's events followed an all-night "hackathon" at the company, where engineers stayed up coding software and conjuring up new ideas for Facebook and its 900 million users.

On Thursday, Facebook and the investment bankers arranging the IPO settled on a price of $38 per share. The company and its early investors raised $16 billion in the offering, which valued Facebook at $104 billion. That makes Facebook the most valuable U.S. company to ever go public.

Now, the stock market will assign a dollar value to Facebook that will rise and fall with investor whims. It will be subject to broad economic forces and held accountable for profit it earns ?or loses? from one quarter to the next.

But Facebook is one a rare companies whose IPO transcends Wall Street's money lust. It is a cultural touchstone for the way technology reshapes our lives. Since its start as a scrappy network for college students, Facebook has come to define social networking by getting people around the world to share everything from photos of their pets to their deepest thoughts.

It has done so while becoming one of the few profitable Internet companies to go public recently. It had net income of $205 million in the first three months of 2012, on revenue of $1.06 billion. In all of 2011, it earned $1 billion, up from $606 million a year earlier. That's a far cry from 2007, when it posted a net loss of $138 million and revenue of $153 million. The company makes most of its money from advertising. It also takes a cut from the money people spend on virtual items in Facebook games such as "FarmVille."

Facebook's public debut marks a new milestone in the history of the Internet. In 1995, Netscape Communications' IPO gave people their first chance to invest in a company whose graphical Web browser made the Internet more engaging and easier to navigate. Its hotly anticipated IPO lit the fuse that ignited the dot-com boom. That explosion of entrepreneurial activity and investment culminated five years later in a devastating bust that obliterated the notion that the Internet had hatched a "new economy".

It took Google Inc.'s IPO in 2004 to prove that an Internet company with a disruptive idea could be profitable. In the process, the Internet search leader is forcing other industries to adapt to a new order where people have come to expect to be able to find just about anything they want by entering a few words into a box on any device with an Internet connection.

Facebook's IPO heralds a new phase of the Internet's evolution. This social era makes connections among people as important as Google's massive index of Web links. Still, the IPO will raise new pressures for Facebook to generate more revenue, perhaps by digging further into the trove of revealing information that people share on the network to sell even more targeted ads.

Facebook's IPO almost certainly will enrich other up-and-coming entrepreneurs as Zuckerberg uses the company's cash and stock to buy other startups in an effort to being in other talented engineers and promising technology. That's what has been doing for years. Since it went public in 2004, Google has spent $10.2 billion buying nearly 200 other companies. Those figures don't include Google's still-pending $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., which is still awaiting regulatory approval in China.

Zuckerberg's biggest deal so far came when he agreed to buy Instagram, a maker of a popular mobile app for photos, for $1 billion. Because most of the deal is being paid for in stock, Instagram is already getting richer. Based on Facebook's IPO price of $38 per share, Instagram is in line to receive nearly $1.2 billion.

Though Zuckerberg rang the Nasdaq opening bell from California, people outside the stock market in Times Square snapped photos of a big blue Facebook sign that lit up the building. Some of them used their smart phones to check in to the Nasdaq on Facebook. Frederick Nolde, who was visiting from Richmond, Va., said he bought 100 shares through the online brokerage eTrade.

He thinks the company is worth $100 billion. "I think Google is a good comparison and it's worth $200 to 300 billion. The real question is how they do in mobile. If they can figure that out they'll do well."

Sarah Palin Radio Interviews Female USAF ret Jet Pilot Running for ...

LaDonna Hale Curzon, Executive Producer, Sarah Palin Radio this week interviewed Lt. Col. (ret) Wendy Rogers, a candidate for the new seat in Arizona, AZ-9. Lt. Col. Rogers is one of first women who became a military jet pilot and served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. She has flown worldwide on humanitarian missions including the Bosnian Airlift during the fall of the Berlin Wall. While accumulating 3,000 hours of jet time, she was Commander of Cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy. She has two Masters Degrees, and many commendations. She accomplished all the foregoing while raising a family.

10,000 Houses, Door-to-Door on a Bicycle

Rogers noted that the new AZ-9 district is evenly divided between Democrats, Republicans and Independents, and believes it is a microcosm of the entire nation. She ran and narrowly lost a close state legislative race in the Democrat portion of the district two years ago. Rogers recounted how she bicycled to 10,000 homes, knocking on the doors of thousands of independents. She will be back on her bike for this run, and all the doors she had knocked on two years ago are in this new Congressional District.

Arizona Roots

Rogers is one of five Republicans running, and the only one of the five who served a full 20-year active duty military career. She did her flight training in Arizona at Mesa Gateway Airport, which is on the grounds of the former Williams Air Force Base. Rogers? husband was also in the air force and they home-schooled their children for the elementary years, then sent them to a charter school. Her children have graduated Arizona State University with honors. After retiring from the Air Force, Rogers started a home inspection business, which went on to be the leading home inspection business in the state. The 12-employee business operates in four counties and Rogers owns an office building four blocks from her home. ?I really enjoy being rooted here in the community,? she said.

Rogers is a fifth-generation military officer, and her oldest child is a former Marine officer working on a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and married to a nurse.

Too Much Government Interference

?I decided to run for Congress, because as a small business owner and job creator, I am having a tougher and tougher time. This is not the country I grew up in. This country has way too much government interference. I am going to Congress to reduce taxation, and reduce regulation on small business so that job creators like me ? especially small business owners ? can create jobs,? she said.

?It?s time to give back. I?ve done 20 years in the government sector, 15 years in the private sector. I am a big believer in what the founders envisioned in the citizen legislator, and in my case the airman citizen legislator.?

Top Three Issues: Deficit, Jobs, ObamaCare

Curzon asked Rogers what she thought the most important issue was in Arizona. ?Last week, we did some polling. The number one issue in my district is the deficit ? people?s concern about the deficit, being in debt the trillions of dollars that we are,? Rogers said. ?The number two issue: jobs. The number three issue: ObamaCare.?

Rogers said she has ?a wide variety of support. My grassroots support is exceptional. We have at least 20 or 30 folks out there gathering signatures. I?m calling you from my campaign office and we have Arizona State University interns coming in to help. We have a broad breadth of support among Republicans. I?m very proud of that.?

American Attributes Transcend Party Divides

Rogers said that one concern is her district covers parts of Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, and Mesa and could trend urban Democrat as the years go by. But she said her prior service and being a job creator would appeal even to Democrats and Independents. She said that she has to make a payroll every two weeks. There are no bailouts or stimulus packages, and she can?t print money. She has to keep the suites full in her office building, which with a community vegetable garden out back. Rogers said these ?truly American attributes transcend party divides.?

Sonic Booms and Broken Glass Ceilings

?I?m a true leader; I?m a trail blazer. I get things done, and I?m a proud of the success I?ve been able to have as a woman in the United States of America. Where else can a woman be a psychiatric social worker, in the Air Force as I was, then go to pilot training and become a jet pilot, pilot jets all over the world, and then retire, open a small business, succeed at that small business, make tough decisions every day, and have a family? To be able to retire as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force is a real honor, and that aspect of my biography seems to resonate very deeply.?

Nothing More Special than Meeting a Voter at the Door to his Home

Rogers said running for Congress is a privilege. ?I love going door-to-door, meeting voters, listening. There is nothing more special than meeting a voter [at] the door to his home.?

If elected, Rogers said the first thing she would do is ?find the other 60 Congressmen ? there are no women ? who have served ? and work with them. She said she would also find those who have owned small businesses, ?and we will work together to get government out of our business.

On Leadership, Integrity, and Trust

Curzon asked Rogers what lessons she had learned during her years of military service would help her tackle the Congress.

?Leadership involves working with people from all walks of life. Leadership involves having credibility down in the trenches, and leadership involves setting the right examples with whatever you do as far as integrity and job competence. Those are the lessons I learned as a leader, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. You cannot micro-manage people. We have to trust one another. I?ve relied on people in my air crews, in my cockpits to watch my back. My life was entrusted to them. And so, I trust Americans. I have an intuitive faith in America and I swore when I took the Oath to defend the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. As a leader from the military, those are very deep-seated core convictions that I have.?

Rogers said she has her integrity challenged as a businesswoman and she does not yield. She said she would take that core conviction to Congress.

Arizona Not in Play

Curzon said that Romney is most likely going to be the nominee and asked Rogers whether Obama or Romney would carry the state. Rogers said she had been watching the Presidential campaign from afar since she had been working on her own. ?The Democrats like to say ?Arizona is in play.? I don?t think so.? She saw Romney in Tempe and he was ?very impressive?.I can tell you going door-to-door that people?s most deep-seated fear is that Barack Obama will be re-elected. I can?t tell you how many people have expressed that fear to me completely unprompted, and we can?t let that happen.? She said the ninth district ?is the tipping point.?
