Chinese Muslims clash with police over mosque (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Hundreds of Muslims in a northwestern China village trying to prevent the demolition of their mosque clashed with police, causing several deaths, Hong Kong media and residents said on Tuesday.

Fighting between police and members of the largely Muslim Hui ethnic group broke out on Friday in Ningxia region, adjacent to Inner Mongolia province, after authorities declared their newly built mosque illegal, the South China Morning Post said.

Hundreds of residents in Taoshan village confronted police armed with teargas, truncheons and knives, the newspaper said.

A Taoshan resident told Reuters he was away at the time of the clash, but that his relatives in the town believed five people, including one of their relatives, had been killed.

The resident, Jin Haitao, said villagers believed the dead included another two elderly woman, a young man and two people from nearby areas.

Residents of nearby areas complained that telephone links with Taoshan had been cut, making it impossible to verify what had happened.

"They were just trying to hold a religious activity but the authorities would not allow it. They demolished the mosque and now they've covered over the ground, because there was so much blood on the ground," Jin said.

A man who answered the telephone at a police station in the nearby town of Hexi said an incident had occurred with Hui protesters, but he gave no details. Calls to the public security bureau in nearby Tongxin county went unanswered.

SPORADIC UNREST

A small business owner in Tongxin, three km (two miles) from the mosque site, told Reuters that the village had been sealed off.

"It's ridiculous, I am a Muslim, and Muslims need a mosque. They are just ordinary people, coming together for religious purposes, not to overthrow Communist Party rule," the man said.

China has experienced sporadic unrest among its Muslim minorities, most notably involving the Uighurs, a Turkic language-speaking people native to the country's western Xinjiang region.

There are about 10 million Hui in China, making them the country's largest Muslim group. In many parts of China, the Hui have blended in with the predominant Han Chinese culture, all but abandoning Islam except for some traditions, such as circumcising male children and avoiding pork.

But ethnic tension has led to some unrest. At least seven people were killed in the central province of Henan in 2004 after a car accident involving an ethnic Han Chinese and a Hui sparked rioting.

In 1993, a cartoon ridiculing Muslims led to police storming a mosque taken over by Hui in northwestern China.

Uighurs in Xinjiang rioted against Han Chinese residents in 2009 and at least 197 people were killed, according to official estimates.

China's ruling Communist Party says it protects freedom of religion, but it maintains a tight grip on religious activities and allows only officially recognized religious institutions to operate.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch takes to Twitter

The 80-year old media mogul Murdoch has begun the 2012 New Year by setting up a twitter account under the handle at rupertmurdoch, it is confirmed Monday Jan. 2, 2012, with one of his first tweets "My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity," he tweets. FILE- Chairman of News Corp. business empire Rupert Murdoch, in this file photo dated Thursday, April 10, 1997. "And of course diet!", and with some 46,000 followers already, it seems that the communications mogul is reaching new highs. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, file)

(AP) ? Rupert Murdoch has begun the new year by setting up in a new field of communications ? he's started tweeting.

The media mogul, who is recovering from perhaps his most difficult year in the business, is posting on Twitter under the handle rupertmurdoch, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop at News International confirmed Monday.

The account was opened over the New Year's holiday, but many doubted its authenticity because Murdoch, 80, has generally tried to stay out of the spotlight as his media empire comes under increased scrutiny because of widespread phone hacking at his U.K. newspapers.

Murdoch faced harsh questioning in Parliament last summer and may face additional questions from the wide-ranging Leveson Inquiry into media practices later this year, but he makes no mention of these troubles in his tweets, which include the News Corp. chief's New Year's resolutions.

"My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity," he tweets. "And of course diet!"

Murdoch had attracted more than 46,000 followers by Monday morning, just two days after he started tweeting. His wife Wendi Deng has also started tweeting ? she's wendi_deng.

She refers to the setbacks of the last year in her tweets: "A lot of bad things happened in 2011 but I hope in 2012 we can put them all behind us and sail on to a bright future for everyone Wxx."

She also gently reminds fellow tweeters to spell her first name with an "i'' at the end, not a "y."

The Murdochs' entry into the world of Twitter was met with some bemusement and some hostility by its denizens.

John Prescott, former U.K. deputy prime minister, came up with one of the wittier responses to Murdoch's unexpected surfacing at the very public, very popular micro-blogging site.

"Welcome to Twitter," he writes to the mogul, whose reporters were skilled at hacking into telephone messaging systems. "I've left you a Happy New Year message on my voicemail!"

Others express fears that the wealthy Murdoch will buy the Twitter site.

Murdoch also deleted a tweet in which he suggested that Britons might have too many public holidays for a country facing tough times.

At times in his tweets Murdoch sounds bored with his New Year's holiday. He complains that there are "too many people" on the island of St. Bart's, an exclusive Caribbean hideaway.

"Back to work tomorrow," he says. "Enough idling!"

Murdoch also tweets that some of his friends are "frightened" by what he might say.

He also praises Mike Bloomberg, the Republican mayor of New York City, and Rick Santorum, a Republican presidential candidate.

Murdoch tweeted his wishes for a happy new year and said it would probably exceed expectations.

"Happy 2012," he says. "May it be better than all experts predict. Has to be! Must must change everything to create jobs for all, especially young."

His Twitter profile is accompanied by a snapshot showing Murdoch grimacing. He is wearing a casual white T-shirt with a light blue sweater.

Murdoch was forced to close the News of the World last year because of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid. The victims included celebrities, sports stars, and a murdered teenager whose voicemails had been hacked.

The scandal has damaged Murdoch's financial holdings and raised doubts about whether his family can retain control of the company, which has substantial interests in newspapers, magazines, movies, television and book publishing.

Study review shows vitamin D, cod liver oil very effective at preventing and treating tuberculosis

(NaturalNews) Sometimes the old fashioned ways of treating disease are still the safest and most effective. A recent review of an 1848 study conducted at the former Hospital for Consumption in Chelsea, UK, now known as the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH), has found that cod liver oil, which is rich in vitamin D, is still an effective treatment for tuberculosis.

Professor Sir Malcolm Green, who used to work at RBH but has since retired, unearthed the old study which involved over 1,000 patients with tuberculosis, a contagious bacterial infection that can lead to death. One group composed of 542 patients was given standard treatment along with cod liver oil, while another group of 535 patients was given only the standard treatment.

At the conclusion of the study, doctors saw stabilization of the disease in 18 percent of the patients given cod liver oil, while only six percent of those in the control group saw improvement. Thirty-three percent of patients in the control group also ended up dying, compared to only 19 percent of those in the cod liver oil group.

"It could well be that the widespread use of cod liver oil encouraged by doctors played a significant part," in mitigating tuberculosis, said Prof. Green. The steady decline of the disease in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is commonly attributed to improved sanitation and living conditions, but Prof. Green says improved nutrition was also crucial.

"A role for vitamin D in combating tuberculosis gives a rational basis for sunshine therapy, which was widely practiced for patients in sanatoriums before chemotherapy became available, as vitamin D is synthesized in the skin when exposed to the sun," added Prof. Green. "Patients were put out on their beds to lie in the sun in summer and winter, and many were sent to Switzerland and other sunny countries for treatment."

A study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine back in October also confirms that, in order for the immune system to develop the capacity to fight tuberculosis infection, it must have optimal levels of vitamin D. Many patients with tuberculosis who are tested often turn up vitamin D deficient, which suggests that supplementing with vitamin D or getting more sunlight exposure can greatly improve healing capacity (http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/vita...).

AUTOMOTIVE - AUTOS: Top 10 News Stories Of 2011

AUTOS: Top 10 News Stories Of 2011

Domestic brands rose, Saab went down and natural disastors took their toll during a roller-coaster year.

Natural disasters ? The deadly earthquake and tsunami in Japan, horrendous flooding in Thailand and the U.S. Midwest, and crushing blizzards across the U.S., also took their toll on automakers and the auto industry. Beside the terrible loss of many thousands of people, the Japan disaster did serious damage to several major automakers, mainly Toyota and Honda. The floods in Thailand, where many parts for Japanese cars are sourced, hampered recovery.

Honda recently scrapped more than 1,000 new cars destroyed in Thailand flooding. (Photo: Honda) Rise of the domestics ? The U.S. automotive market?s gradual recovery was most notable for the resurgence of a streamlined General Motors, Chrysler under new leadership, and Ford?s continuing success under chief Alan Mulally. Chrysler in particular surged with double-digit increases. Also notable was the increasing influence of the conjoined South Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia, as well as Volkswagen.

The death of an enthusiast brand ? Throughout 2011, we were treated to the slow, tortuous demise of Swedish automaker Saab. Sold off by General Motors in 2010 to Dutch supercar builder Spyker, which later became Swedish Automobile, cash-strapped Saab stopped building cars in April. Hopes rose several times that Chinese investors would save the day, but after months of dodging bullets, Saab went bankrupt in early December. The final blow came with GM?s refusal to sanction a sale to a Chinese company for fear that its technology used in Saab cars would fall into the hands of competitors.

Return of performance ? From Chevy and Ford to Nissan and Lamborghini, high-performance cars for driving enthusiasts came back with a vengeance, highlighted by such new entries as the 580-horsepower Camaro ZL1 and the 2013 Mustang GT500, which debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show with no less than 650 horsepower under its hood.
Dodge reintroduced a blast from the past with the Charger SRT8 Super Bee. (Photo: Dodge) Chrysler made its SRT8 performance arm an independent division that continues to crank out impressive muscle, Nissan brought out a new GT-R, and the new Lamborghini Aventador gives us all something to dream about.

More with less ? Muscle was also generated by smaller engines, with CAFE-minded automakers producing four-cylinder engines that churn out 200 horsepower and more, with or without turbocharging or supercharging, as new technology and creative engineering lead the way. The rise of direct fuel injection helps small-displacement engines get cleaner as well as meaner. A burgeoning interest in sport compacts has also resumed, with many tuners on display at the recent SEMA show. Meanwhile, Ford proved that full-size-pickup drivers will buy trucks with powerful, fuel-efficient V6 engines instead of V8s, which they did in droves.

40 is the new 30 ? Chevy, Ford and Hyundai all hit the 40 mpg highway-mileage mark with non-hybrid compacts and subcompact cars, and a number of other automakers came close, according to EPA results, making 40 miles per gallon the target spot that used to be occupied by a mere 30 mpg.

(AP) ? Flying cameras have been providing unique perspectives on everything from golf to college and professional football for more than a decade, becoming so commonplace that fans rarely notice the whizzing remote-controlled devices.

At the Insight Bowl on Friday night, no one could miss the overhead camera when it came crashing down to the field late in the fourth quarter, nearly taking out one of the players.

The ESPN camera narrowly missed Iowa receiver Martin McNutt Jr., who became entangled in the guide wire but wasn't hurt.

"First, I looked: What is it that fell from the sky?'" McNutt said after Iowa's 31-14 loss to No. 19 Oklahoma. "The next thing I know, the camera kind of scratched me a little bit. It was just pulling me and I knew I didn't want to keep going with it."

ESPN has consistently used the cameras for football coverage, making it a staple of "Monday Night Football." The cameras also have been used occasionally in the NBA, NHL, NASCAR, NCAA basketball, baseball and at the island-green 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship.

The cameras, despite flying over the playing field, have rarely interfered with the action.

In 2007, a cable camera was forced to make a controlled decent during an NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks from what was called human error.

At the 2009 Las Vegas bowl between BYU and Oregon State, the overhead camera reportedly had to be taken down due to wind gusts of around 40 mph.

The incident at the Insight Bowl occurred with Iowa State trying to rally from a 10-point deficit in the closing minutes.

While lining up for a play near the 20-yard line at the south end of Sun Devil Stadium, two Hawkeyes had to jump out of the way when the camera fell when the wire appeared to snap with 2:22 left.

McNutt dodged the camera as it fell behind him, but became entangled in the guide wire after it thudded to the ground. McNutt suffered only a minor scratch, but the game was delayed for about five minutes as crews dragged the camera off the field and made sure the wire was out of the way.

McNutt was able to joke about the incident.

"I fell like somebody was trying to kill me on their (Oklahoma's) staff," he said. "If you are looking, I'm looking for you. No. It was lucky it didn't hit me."
