Lehigh University men's basketball coach Brett Reed a strong candidate to fill opening at Northwestern, according to report

Brett Reed news conference View full size Lehigh coach Brett Reed answers a question during a news conference last March in Greensboro, N.C. Reed is reportedly a strong candidate for the Northwestern opening. ? Not only will the Lehigh University men's basketball team be losing a trio of 1,000-point scorers, including the Patriot League's all-time leading scorer, but head coach Brett Reed may be out the door as well.

According to a report on ESPNChicago.com, Reed is "expected to be a strong candidate" to replace Bill Carmody at Northwestern.

Carmody was fired after 13 seasons at the school earlier today.

Reed, in his sixth season with the Mountain Hawks, was ousted from the Patriot League tournament last Saturday at the hands of rival Lafayette.

Reed is the program's winningest coach and his biggest accomplishment was leading Lehigh to an NCAA tournament second-round upset over nationally ranked Duke last season.

The Mountain Hawks (21-9) await their postseason tournament fate -- most likely the CBI or CIT -- on Sunday evening.
