New Romney Ad Disputes Obama Claim on $5 Trillion Tax Cut

ORLANDO, Fla. ? In an effort to combat President Obama?s recent attacks on his tax plan, Mitt Romney's campaign is releasing a new TV advertisement on Sunday that accuses the president of distorting the Republican nominee?s economic plan -- a charge that the Obama campaign says is wrong.

The ad, ?$5 Trillion," says Obama is ?not telling the truth about Mitt Romney?s tax plan? and focuses on fact checks from both the Associated Press and ABC News that dispute the claim.

During the first presidential debate, Obama referred to Romney?s ?$5 trillion tax cut" four times. The number comes from a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that examined Romney?s tax proposals ? including his plan to reduce federal income tax rates by 20 percent, in addition to eliminating the estate tax and other tax reductions.

The center estimated that the lost revenues would total $480 billion by 2015. The Obama campaign used this number to project the cost over a decade and came up with approximately $5 trillion.

But as PolitiFact and other fact-checking organizations have pointed out, Romney?s tax plan also includes offsetting lost revenue by getting rid of deductions and closing loopholes. Romney himself has said that his tax cuts will be revenue-neutral, though he hasn?t specified which deductions or loopholes he?ll close -- one of the central criticisms that Democrats have lodged against him.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said during an interview on CNN that when deductions are included, Romney?s tax plan ?won't be near $5 trillion.? The Romney campaign seized on the remarks and included them in their new ad.

Additionally, Romney's campaign accuses Obama of planning to raise taxes on the middle class by $4,000 with his own tax plan. This figure comes from a study by the conservative American Enterprise Institute that Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith called ?a partisan distortion of a study that has nothing to do with the president?s proposals.?

Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner responded to the new ad by arguing that Romney himself is now being dishonest.

?Whether the Romney campaign likes it or not, independent estimates have confirmed that the specific tax cuts Romney has promised -- including a 20 percent tax cut across-the-board -- would cost $5 trillion,? Kanner said in an e-mail to reporters.

?And independent, nonpartisan analysis also shows that to pay for this plan, he would have to raise taxes on middle class families by cutting popular tax deductions like the mortgage interest deduction. These are the facts of Mitt Romney?s plan and no amount of spin, including mischaracterizing the statements of our campaign staff, can change them.?

Most people living in America are seeking some improvement in various areas of their life. There are different areas in each person?s life where they want to makes these changes. The piece that follows includes several useful ideas for those wishing to pursue greater personal development.

TIP! Reading books on the subject of personal development or self-improvement is good for you. Personal development books that are well written, insightful and instructive can provide you with the information you need to significantly enhance your outlook and your life.

Your personal goals should be concrete and specific. If you have more tangible goals in mind, you?ll be able to better resolve how you might accomplish them. By meeting challenges, experiencing success will shortly follow.

TIP! Strive to be the best at everything you put your mind to. When you are looking for ways to become a better person, follow your passions.

Keep looking for new challenges you are interested in. Trying new things makes doors open up for you. You may learn new things and learn new skills. You might even aspire to reach a goal that no one has reached before. Strive to create something new, rather than accomplishing something that?s already been done.

TIP! Decide what you want and take actions toward this goal. You won?t get anywhere if you only think about what you want to do.

Paying attention to your body is a good personal development practice. When your body tells you that it needs something, such as food, drink, or medical care, then it should be a priority to give it what it is asking for. You need a healthy body to serve you for years to come. If you do not give your body what it needs, you will have a hard future ahead of you.

TIP! Give yourself a boost of confidence by reciting all the things you like about yourself. List all of your good qualities on a postcard.

Remember to practice your core principles. Everyone has basic principles by which they define themselves. If you have a good foundation to defend them upon (and you should), your self esteem will benefit from adherence to your core principles. Truly practicing these principles you believe in will give integrity to your character.

TIP! Let your individual beliefs shape your course for achieving enhanced personal development. It?s counterproductive to focus on things that you don?t value.

You need to know what it is that you want your life to be if you want to develop as a person. Having long-term goals is great, because you could have a big change in your perspective.

TIP! A good leader should be humble as well as powerful. There is an element of service that makes up the character of a leader, as it enables them to lead with gentleness.

If you want to improve, write your goals down. For example, if you wish to become more confident in your life, write that down. Sit down and try to think of ways to give yourself more self-confidence. Follow through on your goals by allowing yourself to use those ideas and resources. Give yourself the opportunity to acquire new qualities and use them.

TIP! Thinking about growing and changing will only take you so far; in order to achieve your goals, you need to actively implement the changes. If you want to change and grow, accept it, and do it.

Approach life with wisdom and modesty. Learn from situations you encounter every day, and make sure that you recognize what you cannot change about circumstances in your life. Humility can help you concentrate on achieving things that are within your reach. Wisdom can help you better your future by helping you learn from your past.

TIP! Do not go shopping for comfort. If you do a hobby versus raising your credit card bill, you won?t have to stress over those bills and will have less clutter at home to clean.

For many, there is a vague feeling of discontentment and an urge to facilitate change, but they lack the knowledge needed to begin. This article has tips and advice that can be the impetus to your personal development plan, but you are the one who has to do the actual work. Simply Scratch ? Sundried Tomato & Toasted Walnut Pasta

October 8, 2012

So there I was, all alone? without kids and no husband for an entire evening!

Pat was Up North bow hunting and my Mother-in-law took the girls for a sleepover as she always does when it?s one of?her grand-daughters??birthdays {bless her heart}. And I found myself in a predicament that I haven?t had happen to me in a loooong while.

I had to make dinner? for just?myself.

All the possibilities ran through my head; greasy burger, fries and a beer or maybe sushi. But I?m not really good at doing the whole out-to-dinner thing by myself, so after a quick stop at the used book store I found myself at the grocery store buying ingredients {and by ingredients I mean wine} to make this pasta dish that I?ve wanted to make for a while now.

Now I could NEVER in a bazillion years make this for neither my husband nor my girls. It was a one-time-chance-of-a-thing, that I could enjoy something soooo extravagant {even though it?s really not} and so I picked up a bottle of Pinot and rushed home before the sunlight vanished.

The ingredients are pretty basic. You?ve got your sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil, parm, garlic, lemon for a little freshness and the walnuts. You?ll also need some olive oil and spaghetti noodles or any noodle you fancy.

I immediately start by bringing a large pot of water to boil. I throw the pasta into the pot right after the pesto is made, so having the water ready and boiling is a good idea to speed things along.

Toasting the walnuts brings out their natural oils and makes them a little nuttier. It?s absolutely fabulous so just throw about a quarter of a cup of walnuts into a dry pan and heat over medium until fragrant. About 8-10 minutes. Keep a close eye on them so they don?t burn.

Mean while I tossed in a few sundried tomatoes {in olive oil} into a food processor. I have a GIANT jar of these? like Costco big, and I would say there was about 5-6 smallish ones. So like a quarter cup packed.

Then after that I added in the cooled toasted walnuts.

A few large leaves of basil, about 5.

A heaping quarter cup of fresh Parmesan that I grated by hand, not the pre-grated stuff? that stuff is usually coated in an anti-caking powder and well? it kind of freaks me out.

I then smashed, peeled and roughly chopped one smallish clove of garlic and tossed that in to the mix.

I squeezed just a smidgen of lemon juice? to brighten it up, about a teaspoon.

Then I drizzled in a quarter cup of olive oil and threw in some fresh cracked black pepper as well.

I put the lid on and blitzed it until it was pesto-fied. I did have to remove the lid and add a little bit more olive oil to get it to a peso-like consistency? so keep an eye out for that.

This.Smells.Heavenly. {by the way? right now is when I drop the pasta into the awaiting pot}

Remember that pan that I toasted the walnuts in? Well it has some remaining walnut oil residue {and walnut dust} in it, so put the pan back on the burner and turn the heat up to medium.

Add in the pesto?

Stir and stir and stir until little bits of the pest start to caramelize on the bottom of the pan.

Meet Pinot. Please take note of the cork that is in one piece? thank you, thank you.

Drizzle a little {or a LOT} depending on how wine-y you want this. Don?t like wine? Try a little vegetable or chicken broth or use some regular old water. Scrape the bottom of the pan to break those caramelized bits free.

Right after you?ve cooked the pasta to the package directions; grab some tongs and remove the pasta straight from the pot and into the pan. Why dirty a colander?

Give it a good toss. Add a 1/4 cup of the pasta water to thicken the sauce. Season with kosher salt and more black pepper to taste and you?re good to go.

Like real good.

I shaved some more Parmesan cheese over top of my bowl-o-pasta and poured myself more of that Pinot. Then I shoveled this in like there was no tomorrow. Luckily there was no one around to watch. It felt great.

I have to say, it was fun making dinner just for me, and making something I like and had enough leftovers for ME the next day. Then five minutes later I was bored, so I poured another glass of wine, caught up on my Words With Friends and then finished off a slice of my daughter?s birthday cake {recipe coming soon!}.

This pasta dish for two is deliciously nutty, light and sultry and did you catch the part where it can be whipped up in thirty minutes? Enjoy!

A delicious 30 minute pasta dish!

Yield: 2

Prep Time: 15 Minutes

Cook Time: 10-15 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Walnuts, toasted

1/4 cup packed Sun-dried Tomatoes {about 5 small packed in olive oil}

1/4 cup grated Parmesan Cheese, plus more for serving

4 or 5 large Fresh Basil Leaves

1 clove Garlic, peeled and roughly chopped

1/4 cup Olive Oil, more if desired

1 teaspoon Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper

White Wine, to taste {I like Pinot Grigio}

Kosher Salt

1/2 box of Spaghetti Noodles

1/4 cup reserved Pasta Water

Directions:

Bring a large pot of water to boil.

Mean while, toast the walnuts in a dry 10 inch skillet over medium heat until fragrant, about 8-10 minutes. Watch closely so they don't burn.

In a mini food processor combine the sun-dried tomatoes, toasted walnuts, basil, Parmesan cheese, garlic, olive oil and black pepper. Process until thick and paste-like. Add more olive oil if it is too dry and crumbly.

Drop in the pasta and cook as directed on the package {usually 8-10 minutes on average}.

Re-heat the pan you toasted the walnuts in over medium heat and add in the sun-dried tomato/ walnut pesto. Stir often while the pesto starts to caramelize on the bottom of the pan.

De-glaze the pan with a good splash of white wine. Use as much or as little as you would like. Stir and scrape up the bits on the bottom of the pan.

Turn the heat off and, using tongs, add in the spaghetti noodles straight from the pot. Add a 1/4 cup of reserved pasta water and toss some more.

Top with shavings of Parmesan and serve.

Arcturus, Avenue Capital Purchase 450 KSF Lifestyle Center in ...

October 4, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

Anaheim GardenWalk, a premier retail lifestyle center in Anaheim, Calif., has just gone from the hands of a bank to the embrace of Arcturus Group and Avenue Capital Management. The two companies formed a joint venture to acquire the new 450,000-square-foot Southern California property.

Arcturus is not divulging the financial details of the transaction, but certain facts hint that the price tag was below replacement cost. GardenWalk is distressed.?It had unfortunate timing when it opened in 2008,? Matthew Stroyman, co-founder of Arcturus, told Commercial Property Executive.

Developed by Excel Realty Holdings, GardenWalk certainly looks like the latest in top-of-the-line lifestyle destinations, but its list of shops and entertainment offerings account for an occupancy level of only 50 percent. GardenWalk was stifled by the economic downturn from the beginning and ultimately ownership went from the developer to the lender.? However, the half-empty tenant roster does not intimidate Arcturus and partners. It?s not always all about timing.

?There?s location on our side,? Stroyman said.

GardenWalk sits within two miles of such entertainment venues as the Anaheim Angels stadium and the Anaheim Ducks arena, and practically just a stone?s throw from the Anaheim Convention Center and the world-famous, recently expanded Disneyland Resort. Being within close proximity to an amusement park with the unofficial title of ?The Happiest Place on Earth? can?t hurt.

?Disneyland draws close to 20 million visitors a year and there are approximately 800,000 annual pass-holders who live in Orange County alone,? he added. ?They might want go to Disneyland for a few hours and we want to give those people a reason to come and spend an additional few hours in the area at our property, and finding the right tenant mix is part of our challenge.?

And the timing is better. Orange County is growing hungrier for retail. With demand outpacing project completions, the vacancy rate is on track to drop to 7 percent by year?s end, according to a report by Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services.

Elliott Management is now onboard with Arcturus and Avenue Capital and the team has big plans for a turnaround at GardenWalk. ?So we need to create awareness in the market,? said Stroyman. ?We need to market and position GardenWalk so people are aware of it, we need to give them more reasons to come to the property. We?re prepared to spend money on tenant improvements and other capital projects that we think will improve the attractiveness of site and help us fill the occupancy up. There?s a good strategic focus.?

(AP Photo/The Tennessean, Shelley Mays) NO SALES

(AP) ? An outbreak of a rare form of meningitis is likely to grow after sickening 26 people in five states, including four who died, health officials warned.

All received steroid injections, mostly for back pain, a fairly typical treatment. The drug was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts that issued a recall last week and has shut down operations.

The type of meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common forms. This type is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mold and which health officials suspect may have been in the steroid.

Eighteen of the cases are in Tennessee, where a Nashville clinic received the largest shipment of the steroid.. Investigators, though, say they are still trying to confirm the source of the infection.

Three cases have been reported in Virginia, two in Maryland, two in Florida and one in North Carolina. Two of the deaths were in Tennessee, and Virginia and Maryland had one each, said officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More new cases are almost certain to appear in the coming days, said Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner. Five new cases were confirmed over the past 24 hours, he said Wednesday, calling the situation a "rapidly evolving outbreak."

But federal health officials weren't clear about whether new infections are occurring. They are looking for ? and increasingly finding ? illnesses that occurred in the past two or three months.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include severe and worsening headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. Some of the patients also experienced slurred speech, and difficulty walking and urinating, Tennessee health officials said.

"Some are doing well and improving. Some are very ill ? very, very seriously ill and may die," Tennessee health official Dr. David Reagan said of the state's patients.

The incubation period is estimated at anywhere from two to 28 days, so some people may not have fallen ill yet, Tennessee health officials said. At three clinics in Tennessee, officials are contacting the more than 900 people who received the steroid in the past three months.

Investigators also have been looking into the antiseptic and anesthetic used during the injections. Neither has been ruled out. However, the primary suspicion is on the steroid medication. Steroid shots are common for back pain, often given together with an anesthetic.

The Food and Drug Administration identified the maker of the steroid as New England Compounding Center, a specialty pharmacy in Framingham, Mass. Last week, the company issued a recall of three lots of the steroid ? methylprednisolone acetate. In a statement, the company said it had voluntarily suspended operations and was working with regulators to identify the source of the infection.

Compounding pharmacies mix ingredients for customized medicines that generally aren't commercially available. They are regulated by states.

The outbreak was discovered about two weeks ago when Vanderbilt University's Dr. April Pettit was treating a patient who was not doing well for reasons doctors did not understand.

When the lab found the fungus in the patient's spinal fluid, Pettit began asking questions and learned the patient recently had steroid injections in his spine, according to Dr. William Schaffner, who chairs Vanderbilt's Department of Preventive Medicine.

"When it became clear that the infection-control practices at the clinic were up to par, the steroid medication became implicated," Schaffner said.

Federal officials did not release condition reports or details on all the patients in the five states. Fungal meningitis is treated with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a hospital.

Seventeen of the Tennessee cases were treated at the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center in Nashville. It had 2,000 vials of the suspect lots, the largest number. That clinic voluntarily closed last month to deal with the investigation.
